Ballistic Vest

2010-02-04 – 10:58 pm

How much is the safety and security of your life and the lives of others worth?

How you maintain your equipment can create safety for your life, the life of your partner, or your family.

Every now and again a product is created that is so wonderful that it begs the question: Why didn’t I think of that? Behold, the VEST REST!

Your gear is so important, why not start maintaining your bullet proof vests they way they were supposed to be maintained, even if you don’t buy a VEST REST?

Most officers use a wire hanger or something flimsy and thin to store their body armor. Some officers just toss them inside their locker on the floor with no support. Storing your vest like that can void your manufacturer’s warranty and create other problems like mold and mildew.

The VEST REST Ballistic Vest Storage System gives your body armor the support and the shaping that it needs to air out and dry off. The VEST REST helps keep the natural shape of your vest. Your elastic will last longer. Your armor panels won’t bunch and create permanent folds and creases that annoy you when wearing the vest. Now you can protect your protection.

Our defenders are dying because they don’t wear their armor. If you are going to protect your life, you need comfortable, dry body armor.

Our product is built to hang 50 lbs of armor. You don’t have to maintain it other than to use it for your ballistic vest.

We powder coated the VEST REST so it withstands sweat, resists odors, oils, salts or any other contaminants. The shape of the cage was created to maximize air flow and make sure your armor keeps its shape.

We found a ballistic vest manufacturer’s warranty:

“This warranty does not apply if the Company’s examination determines that the body armor system has been subjected to misuse, abuse, accident, neglect, alteration, breakage, interruption, damage, improper storage or handling, or unauthorized repair or service. FAILURE TO CLOSELY FOLLOW THE USE AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THE USE AND CARE MANUAL ACCOMPANYING THIS PRODUCT WILL AUTOMATICALLY VOID THIS WARRANTY IN ALL RESPECTS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO VOIDING ANY BALLISTIC PERFORMANCE WARRANTY.

Any body armor system that has been heavily worn (for example, moderate-to-heavy set wrinkles throughout the ballistic panels, open breaks in the outer shell carrier, the outer shell carrier is heavily stained and worn), regardless of its age, SHALL BE DEEMED TO BE ABUSED AND AUTOMATICALLY VOIDS THIS WARRANTY IN ALL RESPECTS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO VOIDING ANY BALLISTIC PERFORMANCE WARRANTY”.

You only need one VEST REST for each ballistic vest. You can use the VEST REST over and over for all of your storage needs.

I have been a police officer for over 15 years. During my public service, I have served in several different fields of law enforcement: undercover narcotics, bike patrol, uniformed patrol, SWAT operator and Detective Sergeant. In all my years of service, I have constantly worn a ballistic vest in all of these operations. I have been in several incidents where the use of my ballistic vest was critical for preserving my life.

At the end of each shift, I would remove my often sweaty, tired ballistic vest and discover that there was no good way to store the vest that was supposed to protect my life. I know that these ballistic vest are supposed to have a life between three to five years. I also know that due to sweat, moisture and mildew the ballistic protection of the vest breaks down.

I sat down after a long shift one day and looked at my ballistic vest, which then was less than 1 year old. I noticed that the moisture and use was already beginning to make the Kevlar material weak. Because the vest was not being properly stored it was making the ballistic material weak. I didn’t even have anything to store it with. Hanging it up on a hanger made the elastic stretch out on the shoulders and voided the warranty. Laying it on the floor just made it stink and mildew.

It was then that I thought about developing a device to protect the vest that protects my life. From that time I spent the next three years developing the VEST REST. (Patent Pending)

I have used and abused this device and found that it truly protects the ballistic vest I wear. By storing the ballistic vest on the VEST REST device, it allows my vest to breathe and dry out. My vest looks better and has stayed strong. It dries out before I put it on for my next shift. It takes the proper shape in preparation for my next use.

The VEST REST stores the ballistic vest properly as if it was being worn. The sturdy 1/8th inch rolled steel cage allows air flow and easy storage. I’ve used the VEST REST for over one year, myself, before putting it on the market for police, military personnel, security guards and all others that wear a ballistic vest as part of their job. I know that this inexpensive, durable, VEST REST device will help maintain the ballistic protection level the vest was intended for.

Sincerely,

Mikal Wersland

Ballistic Jacket

The pictures above show the Army Combat Uniform that has ballistic protection inserted in pockets covering the upper arms, elbows, lower back, hips, upper legs, knees, shins and calves. Foam inserts have also been placed behind the Kevlar inserts for the elbows, knees, shins.

The Patent Pending Ballistic Combat Uniform (BCU) was invented to increase Soldier protection from fragments and projectiles produced by high explosive weapons. Any uniform that is issued for combat operations can be converted to  the BCU.

The BCU is worn with a ballistic vest and enables Soldiers to quickly add or remove ballistic inserts based on many factors to include:

     – The mission

     – Conducting mounted, dismounted or waterborne operations

     - Likelihood of enemy contact

     – Weather

     – Terrain

The Kevlar ballistic inserts provide Level IIA protection. Critical areas can be provided IIIA  protection by simply adding another IIA insert. Level II inserts (not provided) can also be used as a single insert.

Submitted to the US Army Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP).

Areas protected include the: upper arms, elbows, lower back, hips, upper legs, knee, shins and calves. This can easily be modified based on Army requirements.

Foam pads can be inserted behind the ballistic inserts for the elbows, knees and shins that make it more comfortable when taking a knee or in the prone.

The BCU is suitable to be worn during garrison and administrative duties once the ballistic and/or non-ballistic inserts are removed.

Know someone in the US military? Let them know about TACARM products. Soldier friendly: Soldiers  are able to customize their BCU by adding or removing ballistic and/ or non-ballistic inserts to suit the mission and their respective comfort levels. I believe Soldiers will be more willing to wear the BCU because of this.

As light as possible:  The Soldiers uniform is used to hold the ballistic and/or foam inserts and lightweight water resistant fabric protect the ballistic inserts from moisture. The BCU eliminates the need to strap on a separate system that is more bulky, cumbersome and heavy.

Comfortable: The lightweight, flexible ballistic inserts and foam pads conform to the Soldier’s body and are just as comfortable when on foot, or in a vehicle or aircraft.

Heat retention: Is reduced by keeping the non-ballistic material that holds and supports the ballistic inserts to a minimum. The BCU gives the Soldier the option to remove inserts to help cool off.

Easy to clean and maintain: The Soldier removes the inserts before washing the uniform. Inserts that become dirty are washed off with a cloth, warm water and laundry detergent.

Easy to replace: If the BCU becomes unserviceable, the Soldier is issued a new one. The ballistic and foam inserts can be replaced one at a time as they are worn out or damaged.

Dragon Skin Armor Passes More Tests: Dr. Gary Roberts and ‘Test Lab’ Video

by David Crane

david@defensereview.com

On September 15 (2006), DefenseReview reported on Pinnacle Armor’s SOV-2000 Dragon Skin panels passing all NIJ Level III test protocols and requirements for flexible armor systems (anti-rifle body armor). Well, SOV-2000 Dragon Skin has just passed another fairly tough ballistic test, this one performed by Dr. Gary Roberts, who has been following the Dragon Skin vs. Interceptor Body Armor controversy with some interest. Dr. Roberts, a.k.a. “DocGKR” has published the results of his own ballistic testing of the Dragon Skin flexible hard armor (NIJ Level III anti-rifle body armor) tech and an Armored Mobility Incorporated (AMI) Level III SAPI-type armor plate (rigid armor) at Lightfighter Forums.

The NIJ Level III SOV-2000 Dragon Skin panels tested are…

comprised of imbricated and overlapping 0.25″ x 2″ silicon carbide ceramic discs encased in a ballistic fabric/fiber cover and further held in place via high-strength, high-temperature adhesive. Coverage provided by the encased Dragon Skin ceramic discs is 10″ x 12″, while the total external measurements of the Dragon Skin panel are 11.5″ x 13.5″. Dr. Roberts has reported the total weight of the SOV-2000 Dragon Skin panel as 6 lbs, while a Pinnacle Armor representative has stated that the weight of the SOV-2000 panel is actually 5.5 lbs. DefenseReview will attempt to ascertain the reason for the stated weight discrepancy between the two stated weights.

Dr. Roberts reports that the Level III AMI plates are fabricated by bonding a 3mm MARS steel layer to a compressed Dyneema backing with a linex anti-spall coating (spalling mitigation coating). Total pate thickness is 1 inch (1″). AMI Level III plate sizes are 12″ x 14.5″ (10 lbs) and 10 x 12″ (9 lbs).

The SOV-2000 Dragon Skin panel and AMI armor plate, being Level III, are not rated to stop true AP rifle ammo. For that, you have to go to Level IV armor, which AMI does not currently offer. Pinnacle Armor does, however, and it’s called SOV-3000 Dragon Skin.

The following is an excerpt from Dr. Robert’s report on his ballistic test, which he conducted personally:

“Pinnacle Dragon Skin SOV-2000 level III armor was tested this week for an LE agency, along with stand-alone Armored Mobility Incorporated level III plate armor used as a control and for comparison. Both types of armor were conditioned for 12 hours at 170 degrees F, then moved to ambient air for approximately 90 min prior to being shot. The problems associated with the use of inelastic clay backing material have been well documented; as such, the armor was secured to a life-size curvilinear torso replica made of Perma-Gel. Each armor system was shot a minimum of 20 times with five shots of each ammunition type fired against each armor system–one 90 degree perpendicular shot, two shots at 60 degrees obliquity, and two shots at 30 degrees obliquity, using each of the following loads fired at a distance of 10 feet:

– 5.56 mm 40 gr LeMas Urban Warfare (using a moly coated Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet) with a 3718 f/s average velocity.

– 5.56 mm M855 62 gr FMJ with a 3054 f/s average velocity.

– 7.62×39 mm M43 123 gr steel-core FMJ with a 2307 f/s average velocity.

– .30-06 M2 150 gr FMJ with a 2736 f/s average velocity.

All of the above ammo was successfully stopped by both armor systems in this testing, with no armor failures or penetrations, even after receiving multiple hits.”

Dr. Roberts sums up his report as follows:

“Both armor systems clearly met and exceeded the NIJ level III requirements and offered true multi-hit protection from the class of rifle projectiles they are rated to stop.”

Pinlock is a centre of excellence in the field of anti fog solutions and helmet visors.

Pinlock Technology is also active in the industrial market with anti fog lens solutions for all kinds of protective visors and or face shields.

Anti Fog Lenses

In the year 1996, Pinlock Fog Free Systems developed the anti fog lens for the motor market. Pinlock is now supplier of anti fog lenses to top helmet brands as Arai, BMW, Schuberth, Nolan, X-Lite and Shoei. For the user of a helmet with a visor fog forming on either surface of a visor is a major problem. Chemical anti fog coatings don’t last long and quickly loose their anti fogging properties, especially after cleaning. Pinlock developed an anti fog lens with exceptional anti fog properties with a well proven track record in the motorcycle market which has now been copied by several police forces world wide.

Pinlock Fog Free Systems started in 2001 to serve the force market. Due to the great expansion of activities for this force market and to serve the force market and the industrial market in the best way, Pinlock Technology was founded in the year 2007 as a full daughter company of Pinlock Fog Free Systems

The permanent goal of the recently formed Pinlock Technology is to expend the successful activities of Pinlock Fog Free Systems and offer customers best quality, technology, comfort and efficiency to comply with the requirements of today’s users and to ensure the best technical solutions for anti fog lenses and helmet visors.

Anti Fog Lenses for Law Enforcement Helmet Visors and Custom Made Face Shields

Pinlock Technology manufactures high-performance anti fog lenses which are intended for riot control and law enforcement helmets. During crowd control or other incidents where police officers are at risk, good sight can make the difference between getting injured or their effectiveness during the operation.

Pinlock Technologysupplies anti fog lenses for law enforcement helmet visors to both helmet manufactures and end users. Pinlock Technology is able to offer custom made face shields for specific types of helmet visors.

Due to the ever increasing threat of  terrorist activities,  more police men are being equipped with ballistic helmets / ballistic visors. For this reason, Pinlock Technology has developed a range of anti fog products for these tactical intervention helmets that will ensure    protection against fogging on both sides of the ballistic visor.

Anti-Ballistic Helmet Visors: Military and Mine Demolition

Pinlock Technology provides a standard product line of anti fog lenses for anti-ballistic helmet visors.

These are for use in military combat scenarios including ballistic eye protection and also face protection for people involved with the search of mines (mine demolition). Solutions for dust- and shooting goggles are also available Pinlock Technology is able to supply complete sets or  loose components if required.

Fasteners and Fastening Systems

2009-08-04 – 10:39 pm

Mechanical fasteners provide a clamping force between two pieces of material. There is a wide variety of types of fasteners and a variety of materials used to make them. There are threaded fasteners, non-threaded fasteners and special purpose fasteners. Steel fasteners are the most common material used, although aluminum alloys, brass and nickel are amongst other metals used. Aluminum alloy fasteners have the advantage over steel of being much lighter, non-magnetic and more corrosion resistant fasteners. Nickel has the particular advantage of strength at high temperatures.

The choice of fastener will depend on a number of factors:

-Environmental…For example: high, normal and low temperature; corrosive, abrasive and oxidising conditions.

-Nature of the external loading on the fastener…For example: tension, compression, shear, cyclic, impact.

-Life and service requirements…For example: the need for perhaps frequent assembly and disassembly.

-Design of the components being joined and types of materials…For example: stress concentrations; the elastic, plastic and thermal properties of the materials.

Quantity of fasteners required and cost

Threaded fasteners

With a threaded fastener, the clamping force holding the two pieces of material together is produced by a torque being applied to the fastener to stretch it and this is maintained during the service life of the fastener. The fastener is in tension and the two pieces of material in compression. Bolts mated with nuts and screws with threads in the material are examples of this type of fastener. Low- or medium-carbon steel bolts will typically have a minimum proof strength of about 225 to 400 Pa, the proof strength being the maximum stress the bolt can withstand without acquiring a permanent set. For quenched and tempered mediumcarbon bolts the minimum proof stress is 600 to 650 MPa and quenched and tempered alloy steel about 970 MPa. Threaded fasteners are particularly useful for joining components that are likely to need to be dismounted during the life of the product.

Non-threaded fasteners

Rivets, eyelets, nails and pins are examples of non-threaded fasteners. Rivets can be used for joining dissimilar or similar materials, both metallic and non-metallic, to give permanent joints. When the force applied to the rivet is sufficiently high, plastic deformation occurs and the shank of the rivet increases in diameter as its length decreases. That part of the shank within the hole increases in diameter until it fills the hole and the unsupported part of the shank outside the hole continues to deform until a head is formed. A ductile material has to be used for the rivet material, e.g. mild steel, copper, brass. aluminium alloy. For some materials the required ductility is obtained in the cold state, in other cases the riveting takes place hot. Where the riveting force might damage or distort the materials being joined, tubular or semi-tubular rivets might be used instead of solid rivets.

Pins, either in the solid or tubular forms, are widely used for fastening. For example, taper pins are used to join wheels onto the ends of shafts, the pin just being driven through holes in the two parts until it is fully home and giving a tight fit. Taper pins are usually supplied in mild steel but can be alloy steel, stainless steel or brass. Another form of pin is the split cotter pin. This is used where movement in the joint is required or as a locking device : for slotted nuts on bolts.

There is a wide variety of forms of spring-retaining clips. A simple form is a C-clip which is used to lock components on shafts, the clip generally fitting into a groove on the shaft . Most C-clips are made from hardened and tempered carbon steel.

Fatigue properties of fastened joints

The use, for example, of bolts or rivets as fasteners for joints can introduce fretting damage. Fretting is the wear process that occurs at the areas of contact of two metals undergoing small cyclic slip. The damage is referred to as galling or scuffing. Such damage can lower the fatigue strength by factors as high as three for aluminium alloys.

Door Hardware to Reflect Style and Taste

2009-08-04 – 10:36 pm

Tags:cabinet handle drawer and door lock glass door handle
Every room throughout the house reflects the homeowner’s style and taste in one way or another. Home interior design is an art to many people and often times homeowners tend to throw in their own style and personality when it comes time for a home remodel or redecorating project. A house should really reflect on the personality of the homeowners and those who live in the house. By throwing in your own style and preferences it will make the house feel like more of a home than just an actually house that you live in.

There are many different ways that homeowners can express themselves through redecorating the house and throw in their own taste. Some details are more obvious than others, but there are numerous ways to show guests a little bit about yourself with the design elements that you choose. One design element that often times gets overlooked but can give a great reflection of your style if chosen correctly is the door hardware throughout the house. Many people see a door handle or knob as a necessity. While it is true that hardware for the door is a necessity that does not mean that it should not reflect the homeowner’s style and taste.

Hardware for the doors throughout the house encompasses a lot of different details. One aspect of this particular hardware is the actually door knob. Homeowners can choose from door knobs, levers or handles when it comes to this particular piece of hardware. Door handles tend to be used on doors on the front of the house, where as levers tend to be used on French doors or bathroom doors. Door knobs come in handy for other doors throughout the house that lead to bedrooms or family rooms. Choose the right hardware really boils down to the homeowners preference so there really is not right or wrong hardware for a particular door.

In addition to the handle of the door, hardware also includes the dead bolt. Dead bolts are typically only used on front doors in order to provide security and safety to the homeowners. Just like door knobs and handles, dead bolts come in many different finishes. Because of this, it is important that the dead bolt and handle of the door match one another and compliment the rest of the home design. Door hinges are also included in the hardware of doors and should match the handles and dead bolt on the door as well.

Whether you are undertaking kitchen renovations or any other renovations throughout the house, choosing the right hardware for a particular door is important to the overall look and feel of that room. Updating the hardware of the door is a rather inexpensive and simple project that many homeowners can perform themselves. New hardware on an existing door can give the door an updated look. A fresh coat of paint or stain to the existing door can also go a long way to make the door look new again.

Injection Mold Maker – A New, Innovative and Improved Technique of Molding

2009-08-04 – 10:34 pm

Mold is a fungus that grows on many different substances. Unlike plants, which feed themselves through photosynthesis, molds actually gain energy by consuming other substances. For example, if you see mold on your bread, it is most likely consuming the bread it is on. Similarly, mold that is found in the walls may be living off of the wood and other materials that are in the walls.

If you are interested in Injection Mold Maker but are not sure where to go to find it, then you should know that there are a few options in particular that you should be taking into consideration. By choosing these particular Injection Mold Maker companies over any other, you are going to be ensuring that you receive the best quality and value possible, which is obviously very important to anyone.

Bring into Play the Use of an Injection Mold Makers:

The Injection Mold Maker Resource is considered as being the Internet’s best source when it comes to information on machines and resins. The injection molding process and plastics industry has truly become an incredible, multi-billion dollar industry, and injection molding has made possible the cheap and durable construction of various different consumer and industrial items which have had a profound impact on society.

They are a company whose goal is to educate both customers and engineers as much as possible by providing information regarding manufacturers, resins, materials, and anything else that is related to injection molding.

The Equipment Used in Injection Molding:

Their products include mold waxes, polyvinyl alcohol or PVA film forming barrier solutions and mold polishes and buffing compounds, and mold cleaners. What is good about these products is that most of them are environmentally friendly and only contains ingredients that are non-hazardous.

Injection Mold Makers is a method of molding in which the molding material is first placed in an open, heated mold cavity. The mold is then closed with a strong top force or plug member, and pressure is put on to force the material into contact with all of the mold areas, and then proper heat and pressure are maintained until the molding material has completely cured.

The Injection Mold Makers process employs plastic resins in a partially cured stage, either in the form of granules, putty-like masses, or preforms. It is also important to understand that Injection Mold Makers is an incredibly high volume, high pressure molding method that is suitable for a variety of different purposes, including the molding of complex, high strength fiberglass reinforcement.
